5 Tanning Bed Tips for First-Timers (+ Benefits and Disadvantages)

woman relaxing in tanning bed

If you’re wondering if there are any special tanning bed tips or tricks you need to know before your first time, stick around!

Below, I’m going to help you by telling you everything I wish I knew before my first time in one of these beds.

We’ll start with the benefits and drawbacks of tanning this way, so you know exactly what to expect.

Then, we’ll talk what to wear, how to prep and more for the perfect tanning bed session!

7 Benefits of Tanning Beds

tanning bed

One little note: This post is strictly for information purposes. We do not condone tanning in a bed or in the sun.

Sunless tanning (sprays & lotions) is the ONLY safe way to tan, period.

That said, there are some benefits of using a bed or booth responsibly. Let’s check them out.

1. It May Help Ease Symptoms of SAD

SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is a type of depression that recurs in different seasons.

The symptoms start in the fall and become progressive during winter, sapping your energy and making you very moody.

Most of SAD’s symptoms are associated with insufficient vitamin D, which is a mood modulator.

And when they’re natural foods such as fish, mushrooms, or poultry eggs, getting into a tanning bed is the fastest way of getting vitamin D.

2. Helps Treat Psoriasis and Eczema

Having acne is a deal-breaker, but having complex skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis is frustrating. There is the physiological struggle and then the swelling, scaling, and itching.

If you’ve been trying several medications without success, it may be time to ask your dermatologist about light therapy.

Using a tanning bed alongside your medication can help alleviate your symptoms fast.

3. It’s Helps in Reducing Stress

A study showed that people who use sunbeds are happier, balanced, relaxed, and generally less anxious.

The UV radiation boosts the production of endorphins, commonly known as happy hormones elevating your mood.

So, the next time you feel low and bored, tanning may be all you need.

4. It Improves Your Sex Life

I really wanted to have this one on top of the list, but I talked myself out of it.

But there is no shame in wanting to improve your sex life. The vitamin D acquired from tanning beds plays a significant role in boosting men’s erections.

Low sex drive in women has also been linked to lack of vitamin D due to low estrogen.

So, a tanning session with your partner might be all you need for a freaky night.

4. Minimizes Scars and Stretchmarks

Tanning in bed can help reduce the visibility of scars and stretch marks. Try adding sunscreen on scars so that once you tan, your scars color will be closer to your skin color.

5. Convenient Tanning Anytime

With the pandemic, traveling to the beach is a major challenge for many. And even before the pandemic, our busy work schedules, kids, and pets leave us no time for sunbathing.

Tanning beds allow you to get a golden tan anytime of the day you get a chance, within a short time.

6. May Help Darken Jaundiced Skin

First, if you’re experiencing jaundice, see your doctor immediately (as in right this second) because 99.999% of the time, it’s related to a problem with your liver.

Once diagnosed, treatment takes time. There’s no quick fix, period.

However, tanning bed sessions may help hide the yellow patches that come with jaundice, and at least make you feel more confident while you’re undergoing treatment.

Just make sure you talk to your doctor first. We can’t stress the importance of that enough.

5 Disadvantages of Tanning Beds

I promised you to be fair, so I’ll share the possible risk factors of using tanning beds in this section.

1. Increased Risk of Skin Cancer

There’s a major misconception that tanning in a bed is safer than tanning outside in the sun. That’s absolutely not true.

In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, “Just one indoor tanning session can increase the risk of developing skin cancer (melanoma by 20%, squamous cell carcinoma by 67%, and basal cell carcinoma by 29%).”

Check out the video below for more on the truth about tanning beds.

2. Premature Skin Aging

Excessive use of tanning beds can lead to wrinkles or stained skin as well as reduced elasticity. This is as a result of the UV rays penetrating deep into the skin, messing up with the dermis’ connective tissue and collagen.

3. Skin Irritation and Burns

From mild tanning bed rashes to serious inflammation and burns, the UV rays from these beds can wreak havoc on your skin if you’re not very careful.

4. Eye Damage

Artificial UV rays have been linked with cornea inflammations. This triggers keratitis, conjunctivitis, cataract, and ocular cancer.

5. It May Affect the Immune System

Frequent exposure to UV radiation may affect your immune system’s efficiency, increasing the chances of acquiring infectious diseases.

If you still want to use a tanning bed after learning about the risks, then at least take precautions to minimize the potential damage. That’s what we will discuss in this next section.

Tanning Bed Tips for Your First Time

The first time I decided to use a tanning bed, I was freaking out; even after reading several tanning bed tips, I still didn’t feel ready.

There was the fear of what to expect: Would I get a golden tan, or would I end up with patches?  Was it even worth my time and my $50?

So, the point is, if this is your first time using a tanning bed, I’ve been where you are, and I understand your struggle.

If this is your first time tanning in a bed, I got you. I’ll answer all the questions the first time tanners ask (if I don’t cover your question, simply ask in the comment section, and I’ll answer).

So, let’s get started.

1. Know what to wear for the best experience

a woman in white bikini tanning in bed

This depends on personal preference. I personally love to go to a salon with a strict sanitization policy so that I tan naked.

I know many people have an issue when they imagine other strangers have been lying naked in the same booth.

If that’s how you feel, you can wear a bathing suit, but you’ve got to be ready to deal with tanning lines.

Also, remember to apply lip balm with SPF protection, and remove any makeup or jewelry before getting in the tanning bed.

2. Bring a pair of sunglasses

sunglasses on top of a lady's body

Yes, you DO need sunglasses. As mentioned earlier, one con of using a tanning booth is eye damage.

Too much UV rays exposure to the eyes can affect the retina or cause blindness in extreme conditions.

It’s important to note that simply closing your eyes isn’t enough protection. Your eyelids are thin and can only block a small percentage of UV rays.

If you don’t have sunglasses, you can also use the one-time protective eyewear that the salon offers.

While all those are good options, I highly recommend tanning goggles with wraps around the back of your head. This ensures they don’t move during tanning.

Note that taking care of your eyes is your responsibility. No one is going to follow you to the booth to ensure you wear your eye protection equipment (harsh, but true).

3. Keep your first session short

How long should you you tan for the first time? The short answer is 5 minutes.

indoor tanning

However, how long you stay in a tanning bed is determined by your skin type.

Before you get in a booth, your tanning salon should help run some tests and do some paperwork to help you with this.

But I always prefer being proactive and doing the research before I use any beauty products. I suggest you do the same.

Many tanning beds have different tanning levels (from 1 to 4). I suggest starting with level one for five minutes.

If it goes well with no burns, you can increase your time to 7 minutes. Keep adding your time until you know your limit.

No one should tell you tanning in beds and coming out with no burns is impossible; it’s all about patience.

If you notice any burns, skip giving your body time to heal before returning to the tanning bed.

4. Use the right tan accelerators

putting tanning lotion on a woman's body

Tan accelerators help in the stimulation of melanin production that encourages the skin to form a deeper tan.

They also reduce the time spent in a tanning bed, which is a huge plus given the cons of extensive use of tanning beds.

And that’s not all; some tanning accelerators help keep your skin moisturized and hydrated during tanning.

Other accelerators also have anti-aging properties and help tighten your skin as well as hide cellulite.

For best results, apply tan accelerators before tanning, and if you want long-lasting results, apply the products after your session, too.

If you’re crafty, you can even try making your own DIY tanning oil!

5. Shave and exfoliate at the right time beforehand

woman exfoliating her skin before tanning, one important tanning bed tips

Shaving and exfoliating the skin are among the two critical pre-tanning practices. But they shouldn’t be done right before tanning; showering expands your skin’s pores and disrupts the pH.

Applying the tanning solution in this state can fill the pores with solution, affecting the DHA absorption.

It’s best to shower, shave and exfoliate at least eight hours before tanning. If you don’t have enough time for exfoliation, use a bath puff, loofah, or a brush during the shower.

My first time tanning in bed was a big deal; I was scared and anxious. I didn’t know what results I’d get.

I wished I had someone to answer the basic questions on how to tan in bed without any bias.

I hope my blog post achieved that for all tanning newbies out there.

How to Make Coconut Shampoo Bars (Easy 7-Step Tutorial)

coconut shampoo bars tutorial done

Did you know that you can make coconut shampoo bars on your own with very little crafting experience?

Seriously, you won’t believe how easy it is!

I’m sharing my favorite recipe below, along with easy steps for you to follow.

Let’s jump in!

How to Make Coconut Shampoo Bars

homemade coconut shampoo bar on a wooden background with pearls and pink flowers

While this DIY will take you a little longer to make than, say, a homemade Kaolin hair mask, it’s pretty straightforward and easy, I promise!

While some of the supplies below can be found in your grocery store, you may have better luck buying in bulk on Amazon, especially if you plan to make coconut shampoo bars as gifts.

FYI, we used affiliate links to recommend some supplies. If you buy through these links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

*If you want to keep it 100% natural, omit the fragrance oil. It’s only there to add scent, it doesn’t serve any vital function.

1. Cut the soap base into 1” x 1” cubes and place it into a measuring cup

Coconut shampoo bar recipe step one, showing measuring cup and ingredients.

2. Heat soap base in the microwave for 30 seconds. Remove and stir very well. Heat in 30-second increments, stirring well between each heating session, until fully melted.

3. Add shea butter and heat for an additional 15-30 seconds. Stir well until shea butter is fully melted.

4. Add castor oil, stir well.

5. Let cool slightly, but make sure it remains in liquid form, and add the fragrance oil. Stir well.

6. Pour into molds

7. Let it set for about 1-2 hours, or until bars are solid.

Once your coconut shampoo bars cool down, you’re ready to use them (or package them up to give as gifts). Easy, right?

3 Reasons to Switch to a Shampoo Bar

Now that you know how to make them, let’s quickly talk about why you’d want to go through the trouble of making it in the first place.

1. Your entire head of hair gets equally cleansed

This is my favorite benefit, so bear with me, as I get a bit wordy about it!

First, shampoo bars are just awesome in general, especially for someone with psychotically thick hair like mine (and trust me, thick hair isn’t all it’s cracked up to be). Let me explain why.

When I use regular shampoo, I basically squeeze a giant dollop (because a dime-sized one just won’t cut it) into my palm.

Then, I slap that dollop on top of my head and start working it into my hair. As you can image, the top of my hair gets SUPER clean, since it’s getting the biggest “dose” of shampoo.

I have less and less as I work it through to the bottom and the underside. So, I grab another dollop, flip my head upside down and start over.

Not only is this time-consuming, but I feel like I end up with one patch of hair that’s never quite as clean as the rest.

So, how does a shampoo bar fix this? Think about body wash vs. bar soap when you’re washing your body.

With body wash, the process is the same as shampoo in thick hair. One spot gets the big blob of body wash while the rest gets the “leftovers.”

With soap, on the other hand, every part of your body gets an equal amount of cleanser. The same basic principle applies to your hair.

2. Shampoo bars last longer than the bottled stuff

A bottle of shampoo lasts me about two months, give or take depending on the size (and, honestly, how often I wash my hair).

The average shampoo bar lasts me at least twice as long if you store it the right way.

That means either taking it out of the shower when you’re done and keeping it in a paper towel or drying it off and storing it in a plastic tub that closes.

Basically, don’t just leave it sitting on the ledge of your tub. Otherwise, it’ll get all slimy and gross.

Friends with thinner hair tell me their shampoo bar lasts about three times as long as a bottle of shampoo. Your mileage will vary depending on the length and volume of your hair, of course.

3. More natural ingredients means less damage to your locks

Two coconut shampoo bars sit in a clay dish with pearls and pink flowers behind it.

Even the most natural store-bought shampoo has preservatives and other “not essential to actually cleaning your hair” ingredients.

Chances are you know about sulfates– the non-essential stuff that makes shampoo all foamy. Even if you go sulfate-free, though, I can almost guarantee you that your shampoo contains at least one ingredient that you really don’t need.

On the other hand, a shampoo bar- especially one that you make yourself- is more natural.

The only ingredient in our coconut shampoo bar recipe that isn’t natural is the fragrance oil, and you can totally go without (or swap in an essential oil if you want something scented).

All of the other natural ingredients serve a purpose, either to clean your hair or leave it feeling soft.

So yes, it’s absolutely worth the time and energy to make your own. Plus, if you follow our recipe above, you can make a bunch of bars at once.

If you don’t plan to give them away as gifts, you’ll have a year’s supply of shampoo bars in one day! Pretty nifty, right?

Sweating After Spray Tan (How to Deal With & Prevent It)

a lady putting a spray tan on her neck

Among the many beauty horror episodes I’ve had, I must say sweating after spray tan is on the top of my list.

It wasn’t pretty (literally). I got patches all over my body and weird ugly lines.

And of course, I didn’t post anything on my IG that day (that was probably the worst part because I had posted pre-tanning photos, you know #tanningprincess).

Anyway, now I know better, and I’m here to save you from ever going through my horrible experience, so read and learn!

Is it OK to Sweat After a Spray Tan?

using a spray tan machine, a lady is getting a DIY tanning at home

Unfortunately, it’s not okay to sweat after your spray tan.

Spray-on tan is very vulnerable the first few hours of application (4-8 hours). And so sweating can turn your tan into a greenish tone, and you don’t want that.

But with summer, sweating is inevitable, so I agree with you, simply asking you not to sweat is kind of a big ask.

That’s why I’ll discuss other realistic tips on how to minimize sweating later in this blog post.

Why Do I Sweat When I Tan?

Sweating occurs when your body temperature rises from stress, exercise, or heat. And tanning is a response to ultraviolet radiation.

So, you sweat more when you spend more time under direct UVB/ UV rays.

What about sunless tanning, though? You’re not exactly exposed to UV rays (which is the whole point), so what causes sweating after spray tan sessions?

In that case, it can be a result of anything from hot weather to a too-hot salon. Sweating is, simply put, your body’s built-in AC system.

Does Sweating Affect Tanning?

a woman in black putting spray tan on a slim body

Yes, as mentioned earlier, sweating does affect that fresh spray tan.

Remember that sunless tanning is a process and it doesn’t stop happening once you step out of the booth. So, how long does the spray take to set? I’d say 8 hours is safe.

As a result, sweating after spray tan sessions can make your tan uneven, patchy and streaky ( I would know).

How to Prevent/Minimize Sweating?

a beautiful slim lady sweating after spray tan session

I researched these tips after my ugly episode, and I wish I had known this earlier. You’re going to thank me for these hacks because they’re tan-savers.

Here are my tips.

1. Book an Evening Appointment

The first tip to prevent your spray tan from sweating off is to go for an evening appointment. It’ll be much cooler when you leave, so you’re not as likely to overheat.

2. Ensure You Tan in a Properly Ventilated Room

Poor ventilation can cause sweating, especially if the weather is humid. So, ideally, you want to tan in a well-ventilated room.

Alternatively, ensure the salon you pick has ceiling fans and cooling systems; this will help dry your spray tan correctly.

3. Give Your Tan Enough Time

Time management isn’t one of my greatest strengths, so I’m always on the run. But I’ve realized that a little sweat/ moisture after a spray tanning session takes me back to square one.

So, what do I do now? I clear my schedule on tanning day. This gives me enough time to allow my tan to dry up before I dress up.

I just grab a magazine and a glass of wine; so, I have got no complaints.

4. Powder Up

This is definitely one of my brilliant tips for keeping your tan intact. Powder helps in ensuring you don’t sweat, even in areas that are exposed to friction when walking or working out.

The powder also prevents body moisture and perspiration from messing with your spray by absorbing excess sweat.

Some of the areas you need to apply the powder include crevices under your knees, elbows, your chest, and underarms.

For best application, use a clean, huge, and fluffy makeup brush to layer your powder before workout sessions.

5. Stay Away From Sun or Use Sunscreen

After your spray tan session, you need to stay away from the sun for a while.

Remember, your greatest goal is to keep your body as cool as possible, and staying under the sun will lead to sweating.

If you really need to sunbathe, apply a waterproof, broad-spectrum sunscreen; this will protect your tan from turning greenish.

Try to go for a sunscreen that requires minimum rubbing for absorption to avoid disturbing your tan.

6. Tweak Your Working Out Routine

It’s safe to hit the gym 24 hours after tanning, but stay away from swimming too much, especially in a chlorinated pool.

Some of the things that I do to protect my tan from sweating off while working out include:

  •  Wearing the right gym wear.
    • Clothes with breathable materials allow air circulation, keeping your skin cool. You can also go for breathable materials that have a moisture-wicking material to minimize sweating.
  • Taking a cool shower after tanning and moisturizing my skin after tanning.
    • The DHA in spray products causes skin dryness, so hydrating the skin helps lock in the color.

7. Go for a Lighter Tan

I know we all want that golden tan, but if you have an active life or you work out a lot and end up sweating too much, a lighter tan may be the way to go.

A darker tan means visible patches whenever you sweat, and they may be very hard to hide, especially if you have a light complexion.

On the other hand, hiding a patch with a lighter tan isn’t very hard.

Check this video for more information.

Sweating After Spray Tan (Conclusion)

Summer doesn’t feel like summer until you get that golden tan. And I know it takes a lot to get a good tan, from choosing the best products to the right postures.

Then comes the sweating that can take you back to square one.

I know the struggle, but it’s all worth it in the end.

I hope you got helpful tips on how to minimize sweating after a spray tan to make your tan last longer.

5 Professional At Home Spray Tan Machines for 2021

As you all know, I’m more of an outdoor tanning girl, but two reasons motivated me to write a review on the best at-home spray tan machine.

One, I don’t know about you, but since we had the first COVID-19 case in our country, everything went to a standstill.

And since then, it has been lockdown after lockdown. It’s been impossible to drive to the beach for a good tan, and so a home spray machine has been my best tan buddy.

Two, I realized that I’ve been missing out a lot because with a home spray tan machine I can tan whenever I want!

1. Bronze Tan Professional Spray Tan Machine Mobile HVLP Airbrush Tan Machine

I consulted a few of my beautician friends before purchasing my spray tan machine to get recommendations.

This was one of the most recommended home spray tan machines, so I decided to give it a try.

I did get a golden tan, and I didn’t have to bake for five hours in the sun. I was skeptical of ending up with streaks, but that didn’t happen.

That’s my testimonial, but I don’t want you to make a decision based on my word only, so let’s discuss the features, pros, and cons of this spray tanning option.

One of the things I loved about the bronze tan is its versatility. It can be used for both home purposes and professional tanning.

That means I was able to get tanned and tan a couple of family members on the same day without any hiccups.

Another great feature is its portability and size. It’s small in size, so it doesn’t take much storage space.

The spray tan machine is also lightweight, which makes spray tanning less stressful. I also found the handle very comfortable and easy to hold, which was a big bonus.

If you have experienced tanning using very noisy tan machines, you know how annoying it can be. I mean, you may not be at the beach, but every self-care process should be easy and fun.

The bronze machine runs smoothly and super quietly, which makes the tanning process more pleasant.

One of the features that disappointed me was the excessive spraying. I didn’t know about this the first time, so the tanning solution leaked and made a huge mess, which was very annoying.

If you hate messes, I recommend using this spray tan in the bathroom.

  • It’s affordable. Based on the quality of the product, it’s well priced.
  • It gives a great golden tan.
  • It runs quietly
  • It’s lightweight

  • It can cause a mess due to extensive spraying
  • It’s a little hard to refill for beginners

Who needs this tanning set?

The bronze tanning machine is for anyone looking to accomplish a great tan without baking under the sun for five hours.

It’s also a good set if you want to tan several people at home.

However, I recommend the tanning machine to intermediate users because the excessive spraying and refilling process may be frustrating for beginners.

2. Norvell Sunless Kit – M1000 Mobile HVLP Spray Tan Airbrush Machine

I’ve only had good things about Norvell tanning solutions, so their machine was on the top of my list.

I had also read tons of reviews on Amazon, and every user seemed pretty happy with the results they were getting. So, I figured why not give it a chance.

Luckily, one of my friends had the machine, so I didn’t have to buy one for my review.

Did I like it? Yes. And I’ll explain why as I take you through the features.

I love freebies or when a company takes the liberty to assemble everything I need to use with their product and sell it as a bundle. And that’s what the Norvell machine seller has done.

The machine comes with Norvell tanning handheld solutions (Ultra Vivid’ Cosmo Light’ 8oz Venetian 8oz and Dark 8oz) and a great training program.

The tanning handheld solutions are made with micronutrient technology to provide the skin with antioxidants and vitamins.

This ensures you get a good golden tan without the orange undertone. The solutions also leave your skin smooth and well moisturized.

This is essential, especially for those who have dry skin. The solutions also ensure your tan lasts for almost a week before fading out.

The M-1000 spray uses the HVLP-technology, which means it produces the right amount of spray needed for the application.

So, if you don’t want to deal with the excessive spraying of the bronze tan machine, this is a great alternative. Since it uses the HVLP-technology, you also save more because you use less tanning solution.

The spray tan machine is also lightweight that makes it easy to use. It also has a shoulder strap for easy portability.

And if you’re a beginner in tanning, the machine comes with a training program. The latter includes videos that teach proper techniques for applying tan and how to select the right colors.

This is an excellent bonus because most tan machines only come with vague manuals that aren’t exactly helpful.

Check out the video below to see it in action, then read on for benefits and drawbacks.

  • It gives you a good tan without orange undertones
  • Comes with tanning solutions that moisturize your skin during tanning
  • The tanning solution has a sweet vanilla summer fragrance
  • It comes with an adjustable spray pattern
  • It comes with a video training video

  • Sometimes the spray gun gets clogged
  • Some customers complain that the air flow is too powerful

Who needs this tanning set?

This tanning set works for professional use, on-the-go use, or at-home use. it’s easy to use and yet very effective for all occasions.

The tanning set is excellent for those with dry skin as the tanning solutions help moisturize the skin and keep it smooth.

The tanning set is also great for beginners, as it comes with training videos on how to use it.

3. Belloccio Model G12 Professional HVLP Precision Spray Tanning Application Gun

I have honestly not had a chance to use this tanning machine, but I reached out to someone who has one through Facebook and did a short interview.

Based on what she told me, it’s definitely a good choice. She said,

“I first bought it because I was on a budget and I really wanted to tan. I didn’t expect much from the machine because it was so cheap. But it ended up being so much more.”

Below are some of the details and features of the Bellocio G-12.

The Belloccio Model G12 comes with a plastic tanning solution cup that can hold up to 14 ounces of solution.

The cup has a 33 mm diameter female cuff that allows you to fit the hose connection for attaching to a Belloccio Model T75 Turbine Spray gun.

The machine is made of a high-tech, professional, lightweight plastic body that makes it easy to use and portable when moving.

This model also uses the HVLP system just like the Norvell kit, so it saves on the solution by releasing just the right amount of tanning solution.

But that’s not even the best feature of the tanning machine.

There is more.

The Belloccio Model G12 tanning gun’s air cap has 3 positions you can use to adjust from vertical, horizontal, to circular spray fan pattern.

The gun also has a fluid control dial for adjusting the tanning solution’s flow and width of the spray pattern.

These adjustment options ensure you don’t make a mess or waste your tanning solution.

For the noise, I’d say it’s bearable because Annie mentioned it’s almost the same level as a blow-dryer.

Last, you don’t have anything to worry about taking the risk and losing your money. The seller offers a 2-year satisfaction-guarantee warranty, which is more than fair given the item’s price.

Belloccio put out this handy video to show you how to use their machines:

  • It has 3 different adjustment options
  • It’s suitable for both home and commercial purposes
  • It has a 2-year guarantee warranty
  • It’s pocket friendly

  • Beginners waste a lot of tanning solution before they figure it out

Who needs this tanning set?

This machine is great for those looking for a budget-friendly tanning option at home. It’s also a great choice for mobile technicians with many clients that they need to spray in a day.

4. MaxiMist Allure Xena Sunless Spray Tanning System (HVLP)

If you’re a beginner in tanning or using spray tan machines, then I recommend this spray set for beginners. Read more to see why.

It comes with detailed Ce, EU, and ECAL certification spare part kits. It’s also easy to assemble, which is where we get stuck with new machines (I would know).

The package comes with one spray gun with extra cups so you can easily change blends. It also comes with two extra guns and a power control dial that helps manage the solution flow.

The trigger adjustments allow you to control the airflow, which enables you to get a flawless tan.

The machine also solves the clogging problems because it has a non-stick Teflon need that stops buildup and corrosion.

Another great feature is the whisper tech turbine noise reduction that reduces the noise of the machine significantly. So, you don’t have to shout or pause communication during tanning.

When it comes to portability, the machine has a retractable hidden carry handle that seats neatly within the turbine’s design. It helps in moving and storing the device.

The machine also comes with Tampa bay tan sunless spray tanning products that are free from gluten and parabens.

Check out the video below to see it in action.

  • It’s lightweight
  • It has no noise
  • It’s compact and easy to store
  • It’s easy to store

  • It’s not very durable compared to other spray machines.

Who needs this tanning set?

This tanning set is great for beginners because it’s easy to assemble and use. The machine would also work well for technicians who need to spray several people in a day.

5. Maximise Evolution TNT Spray Tanning Complete Kit

This is another fantastic spray machine that can be used for both home and professional use.

The maximise evolution TNT spray tanning machine can handle at least 20 tans a day. It comes with a 570-watt 2 stage turbine motor that’s paired with a lightweight spray gun.

The gun has a German engineered spray nozzle that helps maximize solution while preventing any overspray.

The spray gun is lightweight and has a Teflon that helps in eliminating any tanning solution buildup and corrosion.

This prevents clogging, which makes cleaning very easy. It also contains three spray heads that can be adjusted and controlled accordingly.

The package also comes with Suntana sunless spray tanning lotion to get you started. Well, I didn’t quite the lotion, but I used it and bought a different one later.

Lastly, you don’t have to worry about wear and tear because one amazon user says she has been using the gun for three years, and it’s still in good shape. The seller also offers a one-year warranty.

  • It’s durable
  • It comes with three spray heads
  • It’s lightweight
  • It’s easy to use

  • The tanning lotion included with it isn’t very effective.
  • Priciest option of the bunch.

Who needs the tanning set?

The tanning lotion is great for intermediate users and professionals who need to do like 20 tans a week.

Best at Home Spray Tan Machine FAQs

Here are some of the common questions that people ask regarding spray tan machines.

Is there a difference between airbrush and spray tanning?

Yes, there is a difference between airbrush and spray tanning. Airbrush tanning is done using an airbrush. On the other hand, spray tanning is the process of applying the tanning solution using a booth and nozzles.

What equipment do you need for spray tanning?

You need a spray tanning machine (you can choose one from our list) and a good outdoor tanning lotion/solution. You may also want to use a hair cap and disposable undies (a G-string works best to avoid tan lines).

How long does a spray tan last?

A spray tan can last up to 10 days, but it depends on your skin tone. On light skin tones it sometimes lasts for 5 days, while on medium and darker skin tones can last up to 7-8 days and 10 days, respectively.

Tanning at the pool or beach is fun. But what if you can’t get there and you still want a tan?

That’s where the home spray tan machine comes in. It works very well with people who want to tan every week and have no time to go to the salon.

It also saves money because the tanning session’s standard is $50, depending on the salon.

If you’re ready to save time and money by doing the spray tanning at home, then it’s time to go shopping for a machine.

8 Best Korean Beauty TIPS For Your Skin

I love beauty hacks! But then who doesn’t? Pretty sure you do too. Isn’t that why you’re here? Here is a list of 8 Korean Beauty Hacks for flawless skin.

1. Try a Face Steam Massage

a girl getting a facial steam on a salon

You can get an amazing massage by steaming your face. Facial massage improves blood circulation and provides better oxygen flow. It also tones the facial muscles and hence your face.

  • Start off by steaming your face.
  • Next, use circular motion to massage your face, including your forehead, cheekbones and jawline. Gently tap in between the rotation.
  • Try to relax during the whole procedure and breathe consistently.

2. Use Rice Water as Toner

rice water toner, one of korean beauty hacks for flawless skin

Rice water is a wonderful natural skin toner that is free of harsh chemicals and inexpensive. It removes impurities and dirt. You get clean, fresh and flawless skin.

Here is a quick how-to make one for yourself (you’ll need it for tip #4):

  • Pour a few cups of water in a bowl of dry rice. The rice should be well immersed in water.
  • Let it sit for a couple of hours. You will notice the water color changes to white. It is mainly due to the presence of starch.
  • Next, strain and store the water in a cute jar! You can refrigerate it. The rice water can last upto five days if stored in a cool place/refrigerator.

3. Be Gentle

Being gentle is the key to a beautiful skin. We all might be guilty of doing this one!

In the morning, I’m always in a rush. I may not have been the most gentle with my skin. But that’s in the past. This Korean beauty hack is all about being light on your skin.

Use a light hand while applying products.

Better, simply tap the product onto the skin. It results in a kind of massage that improves blood circulation and tones the face.

It also prevents the unnecessary harsh hand motions that may do more bad than good.

4. Fight Acne the Right Way

an orange-haired lady putting toner on her hands

Yep! Fight acne the easy and right way. But how?  Here comes rice water to your rescue again!

Now you should definitely make yourself some as it is a multipurpose product using that tutorial above.

Rice water is effective at tackling acne. It soothes the skin and works as an astringent. This reduces the natural oil/greasiness of your skin. As a result, there are fewer breakouts.

5. Use an Overnight Face Mask

a lady using a face mask for her overnight regimen

I’m sure you’ve definitely heard about the famous Korean sleeping masks. If not, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

The Korean beauty regime has an overnight sleeping mask that you leave on throughout the night. It is a time when the skin is relaxed.

The mask replenishes and rejuvenates your skin. It has a gel consistency and you can remove it the next morning following the Korean double cleansing method.

This mask can be used two or three times a week, depending on your skin’s needs. You can just switch your night cream to these masks sometimes.

6. Essence is Essential

a middle-aged lady applying serum on her face

Essence is an essential step of the multi-step Korean beauty regime. Let it not confuse you with toner or serum. Essence is more lightweight than serum. They moisturize and nourish your skin. Also, get absorbed quickly. It is believed that it improves the effectiveness of other products. So if you want plump, supple skin, you need to add this to your routine.

7. Use the Double Cleansing Method

a lady in white putting facial foam cleanser on her hands to use for double cleansing

The well-known Korean double cleansing is an amazing way to really deep-clean your skin.

As the name suggests, you have to clean your face twice: once with a cleansing oil, followed by a water-based cleanser.

Cleansing oil breaks down the makeup, dirt, and grime easily without dehydrating and over-drying the skin.

Next, use a mild water-based face wash for that level two of clean skin. This keeps the pH of the skin in balance.

8. Eat the “Korean Way

korean foods on a wooden table

You know that saying, “You are what you eat,” right? It is nothing but true. Your skin is a reflection of what you put in your mouth.

Eating healthy and better improves not only your body but also the skin. Acne, blemish-free and radiant skin is what people crave.

So start incorporating more of the aloe vera, kimchi, soy milk, green smoothies, fruits & veggies.

Additionally, cut off your sugar and also fried food intake. You can start off by reducing if a proper cut-off isn’t feasible for you!

Final Words on Korean Beauty Hacks

These are just a few of the best Korean beauty hacks that you can easily incorporate into your own skincare regimen.

Some things, like completely changing your diet or wearing a sleep mask to bed, take some getting used to.

So, I recommend starting with the easiest- like the rice water or double-cleansing method- and going from there.

14 Incredible Benefits Of Having Short Hair

a beautiful lady with short hair closing her eyes while feeling the fresh air

Wondering if there are any benefits to having short hair?

Turns out there are quite a few, actually!

Below, we’re sharing 14 short hair pros that will make you want to chop it all off!

Let’s dive in and check them out!

Benefits of Having Short Hair

For most women, having long hair is a way of life. Or at least, that’s what they have been made to believe.

But sporting a short hair look is something all women have contemplated at least at one point in their lives.

If you’ve been thinking about it, but are still a little hesitant, take a look at the pros below.

#1 It’s Very Low Maintenance

a lady with short hair drinking coffee in front of their house

Many consider opting for a short haircut because of the simple reason of low maintenance and care. This is specifically the case for cuts done in wash-and-wear style.

Not only are they convenient to maintain, but also save plenty of time in the morning; while your long-hair colleagues are fiddling with hair tools, you’re already all set to start your day.

#2 Easier On The Pockets

a blonde short hair lady standing on a swing

Seriously, you’ll be using like half of the products you were using prior to having short hair. All the high-end products you invested in will last longer.

This will save a lot of money over time. Plus, think about how lesser the salon rates are for short hair styling sessions. Out of all the benefits of having short hair, this one has got to be our favorite.

#3 Saves Time

a vey short hair woman on a business suit using her cellphone on a bench

Okay, where do we even start on how many ways your short hair can save time?

From less time in the shower, washing, towel drying to less time for oiling, masking, etc. – saving time is like the ultimate benefit of having short hair.

And let’s talk about how incredibly easy and fast it is to style short hair. Having short hair is a great solution if you’re sick of spending all the time in front of the mirror.

Once styled, it doesn’t budge much and if it does, it’s really just a quick and easy fix.

Just grab a little styling pomade (something like bentonite clay for hair works GREAT), run it through your locks, and go.

#4 Goodbye Dead Ends!

a gorgeous short hair lady with bright blue eyeshadows

Almost all women suffer from the horror that is split ends. They make your ends frizzy, dry, rough, and slyly climb up the hair shaft to eat away the length of your hair.

Going short is a great way to say goodbye to these nasty dead ends and welcome a healthier, happier hair look.

#5 Great For Summers, Or Any Other Season

a lady with brown short hair wearing a yellow shirt at the park

Summer season is approaching and the struggles of long hair will be apparent more than ever.

This is the time to chop your hair off because there’s nothing better than the cool, tingling summer breeze on your neck.

But, really though, a short haircut is a boon for all seasons. Think how winters bring with it tangles and split ends and how autumn is all about the frizz.

Short hair makes everything easier and simpler to carry out.

#6 Better Sleep

a short hair lady sleeping on a bed with candies

Since you’d be spending less time in the mornings on your hair, you can set your morning alarm for a later time.

Besides, you also don’t have to worry about braiding your hair before going to bed or them coming onto your face while sleeping.

All in all, getting more sleep and a sound one can be a big advantage of having short hair.

#7 It Makes You Look Younger

a beautiful woman with curly short hair posing beside a window

Another reason why short hair is better can be attributed to a younger look and appearance of the hairstyle.

There’s a reason why many women as they age go for a short haircut more than they did when they were young.

For instance, Scarlett Johansson transformed her hair into many short hairstyles when she was inching her 30’s. So, if a younger-looking style is on your mind, short hair might be it.

#8 Short Hair Is All The Rage

a short hair lady in white backless dress

Short hairstyles like bob cuts, pixies are always on-trend, so you don’t have to worry about the contemporariness of short hair.

At any given time, plenty of Hollywood celebrities rock this look, right now, it’s Katy Perry, Kristen Stewart, and Lucy Hale.

So, enjoy this exhilarating experience without doubting your modish sense, because, girl, short hair will always be in vogue.

#9 It Completely Revamps Your Look

a cute short hair lady in front of a yellow lamp

For women who’ve been holding on to their long hair or a particular hairstyle for too long, this could be a chance to revamp your whole look.

A short hairstyle gives a completely new definition to your face, shows off your cheekbone, defines your neck, and basically brings out your outer and inner beauty in a new manner.

#10 Good for Your Mental Health

short hair lady with a reading glass smiling

People tend to cut their hair when they are bereaved. No, we aren’t suggesting the ‘ugly breakup haircut’ or a drastic emo hairstyle.

But a nice new look that basically feels like cutting down all the negativity and moving towards a better future.

If you have recently lost a job, went through an emotional upheaval, or come out of a romantic relationship, taking control and changing your look will help heal your broken heart.

#11 Saves Money & Time in the Salon

One of the reasons to have short hair is because it saves both your money and time in the salon. Many women like to color their hair.

A shorter hairstyle means less product to be used, and fewer charges to be paid in the hair salon.

The same goes for your pampering hair salon sessions. My friend has super long and thick hair, and she ALWAYS gets charged extra.

On the flip side, most places charge less for women who have shorter hair as it means less product to be used and less time is given to the client, which ultimately benefits you too.

#12 It Will Make You Look Smart

People often associate a short hair look with confidence and faith-in-oneself. And it’s true.

There’s something adrenaline-boosting and energizing about cutting all your hair and it takes a great deal of courage to do so.

The same is reflected when you’re sporting your new hairstyle. An instant confidence boost can certainly be counted among the benefits of having short hair.

#13 You’ll Have The Thickest Hair Of Your Life

a girl in yellow sweater with very thick short hair

If you’ve always craved voluminous, bouncy hair, short hair is better suited to fulfill your pursuit than long hair.

Short hair looks healthier and gives an illusion of thickness. That’s like the recipe of confidence right there.

Plus, given that your hair is long enough to pull back in a pony, you’ll have the bounciest ponytail of your life. And it’ll look cute too.

#14 It’s Flattering

a gorgeous lady with green eyes and big earrings

The last of the many benefits of having short hair is to be able to show off your beautiful facial features for what it is.

All the money you are splurging on your skincare and gym sessions can finally come to life.

A short cut reveals your delicate forehead, and in turn eyes and eyebrows, soft neck framing defined collarbones, and can even make your face appear thinner.

All in all, it gives you an opportunity to let your personality shine through.

Showering After Tanning: Pros & Cons

Woman washing long hair in shower after tanning

This is one of the questions that I often get from tanning beginners. “Can I shower after tanning?”

I mean, after all the hours you just spent turning and tossing to get your tan, you definitely don’t want to throw it all away.

Below, I’ll explain why some experts advise against taking a shower immediately after a tanning session, when to shower and how to do it right.

Ready to learn? Let’s get started.

Can I Shower After Tanning?

Well, after a tanning session, taking a shower feels like the right thing to do. I mean, I would love that too.

None of my self-care routines feel complete if they don’t end with a long bath or shower.

But, after tanning, it’s better to hold on to that shower unless you want to have that golden look to last a day.

Here are the pros and cons of showering after tanning.

Here is why taking a shower after tanning is actually a good thing.

  • You feel refreshed. Although tanning is relaxing, it’s normal to want to wash off any chemicals used during tanning. You feel dirty if you just continue with your daily activities after a tanning session.
  • It washes away chemicals available in tanning lotions that have the potential of hurting your skin.
  • It dehydrates your skin. Tanning sucks away moisture from your skin, and showering can help dehydrate the skin.

Here are reasons why many experts strongly advise against showering after tanning.

  • Tanning is still in progress. Tanning doesn’t end at the tanning bed. It continues long after you leave the salon. Showering after leaving the salon stops the process, making it less effective.
  • You miss the magic of the bronzer. Tanning accelerators are used to give you an extra glow and fasten the tanning process. When you shower immediately after your tan, you wash the bronzer away, making it ineffective.

How Long After Tanning Can You Shower?

Ideally, the recommended time for effective tanning is 24-48 hours. But this may not be feasible. You probably need to go to work or grocery shopping, and honestly, you might feel kind of gross staying for 48 hours without a shower.

So, if you tanned outside without a tanning accelerator or tanning bronzer, you can shower after an hour.

This gives the melanin on your skin enough time to absorb the UV radiation to get a great tan.

But if you used a tanning bronzer or tanning accelerator, give it at least 3 to 4 hours before washing it.

If you wash it earlier than that, you’ll just waste your money because you won’t benefit from the bronzer.

How to Shower After Tanning

After the 3 hours are over, you can finally take a shower and get on with your daily activities.

But there are some tips you need to follow for the best results. They include.

Use lukewarm water.

Your skin has been through a lot, so it’s best to avoid straining it with hot water and cool it down to allow the skin pores to breathe.

Don’t take a bath.

I know how much you want to soak your body in your bathtub and enjoy some wine. But after tanning, you’re better off having a shower. A bath or long shower will facilitate the browning agent to come off.

Use mild soaps.

Using harsh soaps will rip off moisture from your skin and oils in the tanning lotion. It’s also best to avoid scented soaps because you don’t know how their chemicals may react with the bronzer.

Don’t exfoliate.

The best time to exfoliate is before your tanning session. Exfoliating immediately after your tanning process can remove some tanning solutions, giving you uneven tanning.

Pat yourself to dry.

Avoid rubbing your body with a towel as it can remove the moisture in your skin or tanning solution.

Moisturize your skin.

It’s very important to moisturize your skin after a tanning process to replenish the moisture lost during the tanning process.

What About Showers Before Tanning?

It’s advisable to shower before tanning because it opens the pores and prepares the skin for the process.

That said, it’s best to shower at least 5-6 hours before the tanning process. When you take a bath or shower, the skin pores expand, and the pH is disrupted.

Spraying the tan immediately can fill the pores with the tanning lotion hindering the skin from absorbing the DHA as perfectly as it does when it has a normal pH.

Since you won’t enjoy a long shower (especially a hot one) for at least 24 hours, ensure you enjoy showering before tanning.

Should You Shower After Sunburns?

sun burnt lady after tanning

Yes, taking a cool shower can help in easing the burning sensation. Cool water helps decrease excess blood flow to the skin, so a shower can help reduce redness and inflammation.

If it’s possible to control your shower pressure, regulate it to keep it low. High pressure will irritate your skin further and probably burst open the blisters, which may put you at risk of getting an infection.

If possible, stick to cool baths until your skin heals.

Showering After Tanning (Conclusion)

The bottom line is, you can take a shower after tanning. What matters is the timing and how you do it.

Showering immediately can wash away your bronzer, giving you undesired results.

Allow your skin to rest for at least 3-4 hours before a quick cool shower if you used a tanning accelerator. And at least one hour if you didn’t use any bronzer.

7 Awesome Tips for Outdoor Tanning

couple sitting on a beach chair and holding a coconut juice while tanning outside

Do you want some tips for tanning outside?

I love tan days, but there is the worry of the dangers of overexposing the skin to UV rays for long that can be a mood killer.

Luckily, with the right tips, you can reduce some of the risks that come with overexposure to intense UV rays.

Below, we’ll cover all the most important things to know before you sprawl out on your favorite beach chair on a sunny day.

1. Choose the Best Locations for Outdoor Tanning

a lady in a blue bikini doing outdoor tanning on the beach

I was surprised when I realized that many people think they can only get a tan at the beach or a pool.

Well, tanning at a beach is fun and more exquisite, but you can get the same results even in your backyard.

The point is, going to the beach doesn’t mean you’ll tan automatically; it all comes down to the availability of UV rays.

You can lay in your backyard on the chair or grass and still get a tan, depending on the weather or your skin type.

Plus, if you do it in your own yard, you’re more likely to take frequent breaks from the sun’s rays. After all, you need to go inside to use the bathroom, get a drink, and so on.

Then there’s the fact that your own backyard is one of the few places that you can try nude tanning without getting arrested for indecent exposure (well, as long as you have a tall fence, that is).

Check out the video below for the “safest” time to tan. Keep in mind, though, that there is no 100% safe time, as all outdoor tanning comes with risks.

2. Know How Long to Tan Outside

This is one of the most common errors that people make when it comes to tanning. Once the sun’s warmth kicks in, we only want to stay and enjoy it.

And sometimes, we intentionally stay longer, hoping that we will tan faster.

Yet, it’s best to do tanning in bits. Start by tanning in the morning for 10 minutes on both sides, and then gradually increase the time to 20 minutes.

If you don’t experience any major issues, you can increase the time, but it’s best to stick to at most 30 minutes per session.

Also, remember- just because you’re not burning doesn’t mean you’re not damaging your skin. A suntan itself is technical a form of skin damage.

3. Check the Day’s UV Index

a woman in a blue bikini tanning on the beach

The UV index is one of the big words that you’ll encounter whenever we are talking about how to tan correctly.

If you’re planning on spending long hours at the beach, pool, etc., it’s important to check the UV index of the area you’ll be in.

The UV index allows you to know when it’s safe to stay without sunscreen and when it’s just better to stay inside. If the UV index is above 3, chances are you’ll need sunscreen.

You can use EPA or Sunburnmap to determine the UV index in your area. Too complex? There is another way of doing it.

Check the length of your shadow. If it’s taller than you (especially before 11 am and after 4 pm), the UV exposure is low.

And if your shadow is shorter than you (around midday), the UV index is high, and it’s best to stay under a shade to protect your skin. The video below will help.

4. Know What You Need in Terms of Sun Protection

During your tanning process, it’s best to take all the necessary precautions to ensure you get the desired results without totally frying your skin. Here is what you need.

Sunscreen on orange background. Plastic bottle of sun protection and white sun-shaped cream.

If the UV index is very high, ensure you apply sunscreen before tanning oil. I know you’re worried about the sunscreen stopping your tanning process.

Relax. It doesn’t stop the process; it just slows it down, which is a good thing, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Lip balm.

homemade natural lip balm on wooden table background.

This is critical if you don’t want sunburned lips because you can’t apply sunscreen on your lips (Eeeewh!).

Apply a lip balm with a decent SPF and if you want to rock your sexy red lipstick, by all means, go for it.

5. Always Bring Protective Clothing

Portrait of beautiful woman wearing straw hat with large brim at beach and looking at camera.

I’m not saying you need to wear your clothes throughout your tanning session. I’m not a party pooper (you know I’m the queen of nude tanning).

And no! I’m not asking you to carry winter coats and ski pants.

I mean light, long-sleeved shirts, a sundress or skirt to cover your legs, and a wide-brimmed hat (Besides, I know you want that wide-brimmed shot for your Instagram followers).

You can wear protective clothing as a substitute for sunscreen when the UV rays are intense between 10 am and 4 pm.

Although protective clothing has a UPF of 5 only, it’s okay if you’re living a natural lifestyle.

6. Know the Difference Between Lotion Vs. Oil for Outdoor Tanning

girl putting oil on her legs to protect her skin while tanning outside

This really depends on personal preferences and skin type. Suntan oils don’t have much SPF for protection, so it’s best for folks with darker skin.

Or people who already have a darker tan and are only enhancing it. But if you have sensitive skin, it’s best to use tanning lotion.

While you can make your own natural tanning oils, it’s best to avoid using baby oil for tanning.

Here is more information if you want to know other differences between sun tanning lotions, creams, or oils.

7. Always Protect Your Eyes

tanning outside protective sunglasses 1

Besides your skin, you also need to protect your eyes, so I recommend packing a pair of sunglasses. The latter will also help if you want to see the bright sun or keep busy with a magazine.

But you have to be very careful to avoid funny tan lines.

To prevent this, set a few minutes to close your eyes to allow tanning and then wear sunglasses. I love to meditate and just listen to my mind and body for those few minutes.

Awesome Tips for Outdoor Tanning (Conclusion)

I hope you loved my tips for tanning outside for a beautiful tan. Always be sure to take care of your skincare when tanning by taking all precautions.

By doing so, you avoid sunburns, uneven tanning and generally end up with a great golden tan.

Tanning When It’s Cloudy: Is it Possible?

couple lying down on the cliff near the sea to get tan while it's cloudy

Can you get tan when it’s cloudy?

Short answer, yes, you can; the real questions are how…and how well?

We’ll explore all the ins and outs of getting a tan even when you can barely see the sun peeking through the clouds.

Let’s dig in, shall we?

Can You Get a Tan Through Clouds?

At the beginning of summer, tanning fanatics are psyched up and ready to lay out under those hot rays to start working on their bronze.

But not many people think about tanning during cloudy days; and it’s mostly because they don’t think it’s remotely possible.

Well, guess what? You don’t need to wait until you see him (the sun) to get a tan. You can tan through clouds when the UV rays find their way to your skin, enhancing melanin production.

To understand more about tanning with clouds, we’ll have to explain how UV rays impact your skin.

Before we do that, though, just a quick disclaimer: tanning even on a cloudy day can result in sunburns and other skin damage.

The only safe way to tan is by using self-tanning lotions and sprays, period. These tanning tips are merely for informational purpose only and we do not condone laying in the sun.

Science Behind Tanning

When you expose your skin to ultraviolet rays, it causes the skin cells to produce the pigment melanin that darkens through oxidation.

With enough time in the sun, the cells migrate closer to the skin’s top surface, producing more melanin and further darkening it.

The pigment absorbs UV radiation and defends further penetration to the skin tissue.

How Does Tanning Work?

The bronze tan you get is the reaction your skin gives when it can’t stand the effects of exposure to sun rays any more. It’s kind of like your skin’s defense system against the sun’s harmful rays.

But the main takeaway here is that it’s not overexposure to the visible sunlight that causes sunburns, tan, or cancer.

When sunbathing, your skin tans as a result of overexposure to UVB or UVA rays. The intensity of the sun’s rays changes depending on the type of clouds and altitude.

For example, the grey clouds can stop at least 53% of UV rays from passing through when the beautiful fluffy white clouds only prevent 10% of UV rays from penetrating.

I guess that explains how you ended up with that unplanned tan or sunburn you got on a cloudy day.

Specialists have created the same rays through tanning beds which gives results faster than the natural sun.

5 Tips for Tanning on a Cloudy Day

One mistake you can’t afford to make when tanning on a cloudy day is underestimating UV rays’ strength.

To achieve an even tan during cloudy weather, here are some tips.

#1 Tan at the Right Time

a lady in a blue bikini doing outdoor tanning on the beach

One great way to avoid the harshest effects of UV rays is choosing the best time to tan. Aim for times when the sun’s rays are at their weakest, or before 10 am and after 4 pm.

Hours between 10 am and 4 pm are considered the suns “peak hours,” and some people purposely tan during these hours to tan fast.

However, I don’t recommend it. Tanning when the sun rays are mild reduces your chances of getting burnt or developing patches, especially if you have a pale complexion.

Note the word “reduces.” It’s still entirely possible to burn at 8 am or 5 pm!

#2 Choose the Right Location

a man tanning in front of the beautiful beach

Even when it’s cloudy, you can easily spot parts that are less so than others. Spots where you can almost see the sun peeking through.

If your sole goal is to achieve an even tan, then those are the spots you’ll want to pick.

That said, ensure you moderate your tanning time to avoid getting sunburns. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that just because it’s cloudy, you have to stay outside longer.

#3 Follow the Normal Pre-Tanning Routine

girl putting oil on her legs to protect her skin while tanning outside

Even during cloudy days, it’s important to prepare your skin well before a tan. We’ve shared tips on doing just that in our “can you tan without lotion” discussion.

The pointers below summarize it.

  • Exfoliate your skin for a good and long-lasting tan. The night before your tanning session, take a shower using an excellent natural scrub to get rid of dead cells.
  • Moisturize your skin to lock in the moisture after the shower and boost your skin’s health.
  • Apply sunscreen. Go with sunscreen with SPF 10 or 15 to protect the overexposed areas.

#4 Tan on a Comfortable Towel or Chair

couple sitting on a beach chair while tanning

What does the chair you sit on having to do with a tan in cloudy weather? Everything.

This is because you need to stretch out your body well to ensure you tan everywhere and avoid patches.

Also, remember to keep turning to make sure you tan both sides of your body. You can use a timer and turn every 10 minutes.

If you have pale skin, avoid long hours in the sun and allow your skin to tan gradually and prevent the risk of getting sunburns

Also, it’s best to ensure that you stick to the same number of hours for all tanning sessions.

#5 Follow the Post-Tan Skincare Routine

Woman washing long hair in shower after tanning

Don’t be lax about your after-tan skincare routine. Here are some of the things you can do to keep the shine.

  • Take a shower after tanning. This keeps your pores from clogging by getting rid of sweats and creams.
  • Use good quality moisturizers to hydrate your skin.
  • Take 12 ounces of water. This shouldn’t be a regular thing; it’s just crucial after staying overexposed to the sun for long hours.

Do You Need Lotion for Tanning on a Cloudy Day?

It’s important to use tanning lotion on a cloudy day. Based on cloud thickness, UV rays on a cloudy day can be stronger than on a sunny day.

This means it can cause more damage to your skin. Ensure you use tanning lotion and sunscreen even when tanning on a cloudy day.

Can You Get Tan When It’s Cloudy (Conclusion)

You can achieve a beautiful tan even on a cloudy day because the UV rays are still present.

Therefore, avoid overexposing your skin to the sun on a cloudy day or tanning for too long.

If you want to achieve a beautiful tan on a cloudy day without hurting your skin, the tips I discussed can help you do that.

First, using an outdoor tanning lotion doesn’t guarantee a good tan (but it does improve your odds).

Second, before you slather ANY of these all over your body, do a small patch test first.

This is especially important if you’re using them for nude tanning! You don’t want to find out you’re allergic to a lotion when it’s already on your most sensitive bits. 🙂

Last, it’s only responsible to remind you that tanning in the sun or a bed is dangerous and can lead to skin problems ranging from mild burns to skin cancer. So, use common sense.

Okay, let’s dive in and check out the winner, then the runner-ups.

1. WINNER: Ed Hardy Tanning Lotion #Beachtime Coconut

This is my pick for the winner! So, if you’re in a hurry, you can skip the rest, grab this Ed Hardy tanning lotion and hit the beach.

I’ll explain all the reasons why I highly vouch for it.

The best feature of this one is that you can use it for both indoor and outdoor tanning.

One of its main ingredients is coconut oil, which keeps your skin soft and moisturized when sunbathing.

Thanks to the intense hydrating effect of the skin, you get a long-lasting tan.

The product also has seaweed extract that helps eliminate toxins from your body, leaving your skin very clear after tanning.

Other valuable ingredients in Ed Hardy Tanning Lotion #Beachtime Coconut are hibiscus and passion.

The latter is rich in Vitamin A and C, which protects your skin against free radical change.

On the other hand, hibiscus increases the skin’s elasticity, giving you a natural youth boost. It also evens your skin’s texture and tone, which is a huge bonus.

The body fit feature is another unique feature of this tanning lotion; instead of affecting your skin with frequent use, it firms up your skin. And as you enjoy basking, the lotion will also be working on cellulitis.

And lastly, if you have a tattoo, you’ll be happy to know this outdoor tanning lotion has a built-in tattoo fade protector.

  • Contains healthy vitamins and nutrients that keep your skin healthy
  • Protects your skin from free radical change during the tanning
  • Built-in tattoo protector to help achieve a perfect tan without removing tattoos
  • Amazing moisturizing and hydrating effects
  • Goes on smoothly and absorbs quickly, leaving a nice shimmering sheen.

  • Some people don’t find the scent pleasant
  • It’s not suitable for people who want an outdoor tanning lotion with a bronzer
  • Could be too harsh for super sensitive skin.

Who Needs this Lotion?

This lotion works well for most skin types, thanks to its amazing hydrating powers.

However, a few people did break out from it, so if you have SUPER sensitive skin, definitely spot-test first.

It’s even better for people who have dry and flaky skin as it will keep your skin moisturized the entire time.

Ed Hardy Tanning Lotion #Beachtime Coconut is also favorable for those who are simply looking for a lotion with limited chemicals.

The tanning intensifiers in the lotion facilitate tanning without a bronzer.

2. Sun of a Beach from Tanning Paradise

The name of this tanning lotion has nothing to do with why it’s my second-best outside tanning lotion, but it’s good to give credit where it’s due.

‘Could you please get me my sun of a beach?‘ sounds like a good joke.

Anyway, let’s get to why the tanning paradise sun of a beach is a great choice.

If you don’t like the Ed Hardy Tanning Lotion #Beachtime Coconut because it doesn’t have a bronzer, you can go for sun of a beach.

The lotion has an instant black bronzing lotion, so you’re assured of a quick tan.

Another great feature of the lotion is the superior soft silicone formula that ensures your tan lasts longer.

And if the old age is kicking in (I mean, those aging signs catch up with us eventually), the paradise tanning lotion will give you more than a tan.

It helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, leaving you with a smooth complexion.

The tanning lotion also deals with those notorious stretch marks and scars.

This is possible because the tanning paradise sun of a beach is very high in Vitamin A, E, and antioxidants.

The tanning paradise also has an after tan-odor eliminator, so you leave the beach tanned and a fresh smell. The lotion has a fruity and fresh scent, similar to a pineapple.

And for tattoo lovers, this tanning lotion also has tattoo and color protectors so you can breathe. Your tattoo won’t fade or change in any way after tanning.

  • It has an instant bronzer, so tanning is fast
  • It has a very pleasant smell
  • It has a perfect texture, soft but not too oily or watery
  • It keeps your skin moisturized
  • It has an after tan-odor feature, so it leaves you smelling fresh after tanning

  • It has a bronzer, which is a deal-breaker for those leading a natural lifestyle
  • If you don’t like strong scents, it’s not for you

Who Needs the Lotion?

The lotion is great for those looking for an outdoor tanning lotion with a bronzer for a quick tan.

The paradise sun of a beach works for sensitive skin, who want a fast tan while still protecting the skin.

3. Jergens Natural Glow +FIRMING Self Tanner

If you’re looking for something that’s pocket-friendly and safer than basking in the sun for your tan, then Jergens Natural Glow +FIRMING Self-Tanner will work perfectly for you.

And no, the pricing has nothing to do with the quality. This self-tanner gives you a great golden glow.

One Amazon user says that he used the lotion after his wife insisted he was getting pale and needed to bask a little.

To cut a long story short, he got such a good tan that his wife believed he was sunbathing.

Well, lying isn’t cool, but you get the point. But what really makes it an excellent choice for you? See below.

It’s a no-brainer that the firming feature is what makes it different. My mom has always used both the general and firming versions over the years.

But now that she’s in her golden years, she realized her legs were looking “too old and creepy” (her words).

She switched to the firming gel, and she can finally wear bathing suits again.

See, as we age, the level of collagen and elastin diminishes, which causes loss of skin firmness.

Jergens self-tan helps you tan gradually, so it works well if you have fair skin.

And since the lotion is infused with anti-cellulite formula and green tea infusions, it also helps reduce cellulite appearance in seven days (their claim).

If you have dry skin, you don’t have to worry about your skin cracking after tanning quite so much.

Jergens Natural Glow +FIRMING Self-Tanner has coconut water and antioxidants that keep the skin hydrated, moisturized, and healthy.

  • It keeps the skin hydrated and moisturized
  • It strengthens the skin, giving you a tight and smooth skin
  • It works well with fair skin because it gives a gradual tan
  • It reduces the appearance of cellulite within 7 days
  • It’s pocket friendly

  • Some feel the smell is really unpleasant.
  • As with all self-tanners, it’s prone to streaking.

Who Needs the Lotion?

The Jergens Natural Glow +FIRMING Self-Tanner works well for those with fair skin and needs a gradual tan.

It also works well with individuals who want to reduce the appearance of cellulite and strengthen the skin.

However, as with all sunless tanners, you have to be really careful about applying it just right to avoid streaks.

4. Hawaiian Tropic Dark Tanning Oil

I first saw this tanning oil with my dad, who rarely uses any lotion or moisturizer.

But after spending the day laying in the sun, with no sunscreen, he ended up with ears that literally looked like toast, so he had to do something.

He pulled out what he likes to call his “magic oil,” and he swore that the pain from the sunburn disappeared immediately.

I asked him if I could try it, too, and boy! I loved it.

As we speak, the Hawaii Tropic Dark Tanning Oil is locked in my dad’s cabinet because it’s in high demand in this house.

One thing that’s so special about the Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning lotion is that it’s made of multiple natural essential oils and antioxidants.

The product gives you a quick, intense tan while conditioning your skin and leaves your skin moisturized.

It works out very well for folks with dry skin because it contains exotic moisturizing ingredients, so it keeps the skin hydrated.

The oil also protects your skin from reacting with free radicals because it’s rich in Vitamin E, C, and A.

However, the Hawaiian tropic dark tanning oil has a low SPF of 6, so you must reapply it often to avoid sunburns.

Since it’s an oil, it’s somewhat greasy, too.

When it comes to the scent, it has a classic coconut fragrance, which is sweet but not too strong.

  • A combination of essential natural oils that are beneficial to your skin
  • It contains skin conditioners
  • It has a sweet coconut fragrance
  • It keeps the skin very moisturized

  • It doesn’t have bronzers
  • It doesn’t have tattoo protectors

Who needs this lotion?

This tanning lotion works well for individuals with dry skin because it has high moisturizing power.

It’s also a good option if you’re looking for a natural product.

5. Millennium Tanning New Solid Black Bronzer Tanning Bed Lotion

I’m sure you’ve come across the Millennium lotion in several tanning lotion reviews. So, is it worth the hype?

Well, I’ll give you the details, and you can judge for yourself.

This tanning lotion’s greatest strength is its greatest setback too, and that’s its Ultra Advanced 100X Silicone Bronzer and auto-darkening technology.

This means if you want to get a tan in the shortest time possible, this is the best outdoor sun tanning lotion for you.

The reason the millennium tanning lotion isn’t higher on this list is because some users with sensitive and fair skin experience allergic reactions.

So, if you fall into these two categories, I suggest testing the lotion on a small part of your body fast.

Products in the millennium lotion that cause the instant tan include pecan seed, sunflower, oleracea fruit oil, banana fruit extract, and camellia oleifera leaf extract.

The formula also keeps your skin hydrated and smooth. And the best part is that it keeps your skin moisturized for 24 hours.

Another impressive feature is the silicone emulsion that restores the skin’s firmness and reduces the cellulite appearance. It also has anti-aging properties, which is always a bonus for me.

And if you hate it when you apply tanning lotions and feel all greasy, then you’ll love this lotion. It spreads evenly and has excellent lotion consistency.

However, it’s not water-resistant, so it’s important to give it at least 15 minutes for absorption before diving into the pool.

Millennium tanning lotion is among the most popular tanning lotions on Amazon, and unless you have an allergic reaction, you’ll love it too.

  • Sweet scent
  • It contains anti-aging properties
  • Gives an instant golden tan
  • It has a bronzer

  • Not good for sensitive skin
  • No SPF

Who needs the lotion?

The Millennium tanning lotion is perfect for people who want a quick fast tan.

It also works well for people with dry skin because it has a moisturizing effect that lasts for 24 hours.

But if you have sensitive skin, it’s best to either test the product on a small patch or choose one of my other recommendations.

6. Ed Hardy Coconut Kisses Golden Tanning Lotion

Here’s another great one by Ed Hardy, in case you didn’t like our top pick.

I will actually not beat around the bush with this one; I’ll just show you why it’s a good choice – it pretty much sells itself.

This product is a great fit for those who are looking to catch the first summer sun.

It’s one of the best outdoor tanning accelerators as it gives you a base tan within a few days.

Among the formulas that help you tan faster are Quad Tyrosine Blend and MelanoBronzer.

These products enhance the production of melanin in your skin that is responsible for your tan.

The lotion also has a Melactiva, a melanin synthesizer that ensures the dark tan lasts.

The lotion is thinner compared to other lotions, but that means the skin absorbs it fast. It also has a high hydrating and absorbing moisturizer that keeps the skin nourished.

And for those with dry skin, the infused coconut butter, coconut milk, and coconut oil will keep your skin hydrated throughout the tanning process.

The Ed Hardy Coconut Kisses Golden Tanning Lotion also has a BodyFit feature that reduces cellulite and promotes skin firmness.

As soon as you start using the product, you’ll notice your skin feels and looks so much better.

The other great feature is the tattoo protector and other secret ingredients that keep tattoos away from fading.

Unfortunately, the product has no SPF, but you can always mix it with sunscreen to ensure you don’t risk getting sunburns when tanning.

The other feature that this tanning lotion lacks is a bronzer, so if you don’t want to look pale on your first day at the beach, consider other products on the list.

  • Reduces the appearance of cellulite
  • Moisturizes the skin
  • It gives a great, perfect base tan
  • Offers tan protection
  • It gives a long-lasting tan

  • It’s thinner than lotion
  • It has no SPF
  • It doesn’t have a bronzer

Who Needs the Lotion?

This lotion is a great choice for individuals with dry skin because of its high hydrating and moisturizing effect.

It’s also great for those looking for a long-lasting tan (and who isn’t?).

7. Sun Day Fun Day Indoor/ Outdoor Tanning Lotion

The biggest pro of this tanning lotion is that it works for outdoor and indoor tanning lotion purposes.

It’s my go-to tanning lotion when I think I want to do indoor and outdoor tanning and save some coins in the process.

Although it’s last on my list, Sun Day Fun Day has multiple outstanding features. See for yourself.

For starters, it has multiple accelerators that enhance melanin production, which helps you get a fast tan.

It also has hydrating butter with dark tanning activators that help you get a great tan.

If you’ve tried tanning before and all you got were orange tints, this lotion will change that.

Sun Day Fun Day also has ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa that keep the skin smooth and moisturized.

So, if you have dry skin, this tanning lotion is a perfect choice for you.

Another great ingredient in the lotion is vitamin E, as it helps slow down the aging process by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

What I love the most about this lotion is that it has a white lotion bronzer.

This means it doesn’t stain clothes, so you can avoid the mess that comes with other tanning lotions.

The only setback is that it also doesn’t have a SPF, so it’s important to use sunscreen when you’re tanning outside.

  • It keeps the skin moisturized and nourished
  • It reduces the appearance of cellulite and fine lines
  • It can be used for both outdoor and indoor tanning
  • It doesn’t stain clothes

  • No SPF

Who Needs the Lotion?

This lotion is great if you’re trying to slow down the aging process. It helps hide those fine lines and cellulite and allow you to rock your bikini in peace.

It also works well for people with dry skin as the coconut ingredients ensure the skin stays moisturized.

Outdoor Tanning Lotion FAQs

Here are some of the common questions that people ask regarding outdoor tanning lotions.

Can you use indoor tanning lotion outside?

Indoor and outdoor tanning lotions are made with different ingredients. This is because although they serve the same purpose, they do so in different environments.

For example, indoor lotions do not have SPF, so if you decide to use them for outdoor tanning, you should consider applying sunscreen.

Should I put on lotion before tanning outside?

Yes, you should apply lotion when tanning outside.

Tanning lotions increase the depth and rate of tanning and also contain bronzers that fasten the process.

The bronzers enhance the tanning giving you a darker tan that lasts longer.

Is lotion or oil better for tanning outside?

This depends on your personal preference.

Suntan oils do not contain SPF and are mainly used by people looking to get a fast tan.

On the other hand, tanning lotions have a higher SPF, giving the user a gradual tan.

The best outdoor tanning lotion can vary from one individual to another based on their goals.

Some people want lotions that contain bronzers for that quick tan, while others prefer lotions packed with natural ingredients that give a gradual tan.

Whatever your preference is, you should have no trouble finding one that’s right for you from my list.
