Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve had a blog for over three years now. Obviously, there’s a lot of stuff that’s happened and some things you may be surprised about. Here’s what I get asked, you know, commonly.

Where do you live?
I’m currently on the road and in Austin, TX.

Where are you from?
Northeastern Pennsylvania

Why is your accent so weird?
I’m one of those people who has a vocal pattern that’s easily influenced by others. I’ve done A LOT of moving around from Pennsylvania to New York City to Italy to South Carolina to Boston. Needless to say, all the regional accents has led me to an unplaceable way of speaking.

What do you do?
In June 2013, I quit my full-time job and started working for myself. I currently have what my career counselor calls a
“Portfolio Career” which consists of blogging, social media consulting, copywriting and selling my thrift finds on eBay. I’m making it work.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes, three sisters!

That’s a lot of sisters!
I know! It is!

Did you really drive across the country by yourself?
I did! Between June and August 2013, I took a road trip across America by myself. It was an insane thing to do. It was incredibly hard, emotionally taxing but entirely worth every single minute. I learned so much about myself including how to be brave.

Questions About Blogging

Do you get paid to blog?
In short, sometimes but not usually. I blog because I love writing and expressing my opinion. I also love my readers and the blogging community. All posts that have been “Sponsored,” or, in other words, I received money to write them, are clearly marked in accordance to FTC guidelines. You can read more about my site policies here.

So you’re a feminist blogger. What does that mean?
In February 2011, I decided to start talking about race, vegan lifestyles and animal testing.

Wait, that doesn’t sound like a feminist!
I’m not your momma’s feminist. I wouldn’t even consider myself a feminist by my generation’s standards. I am a feminist in my own right and what that means to me is living by what I believe to strive for equality for all people and living things, not just women. I believe a feminist is someone who stands up for what she believes even when it’s hard to have a strong opinion. A feminist is someone who believes in the autonomy of women to make their own decisions, whether it be over family planning or what shoes she wears to work. Fashion is feminism.

Why did you name your blog Those Graces?
After a lot of brainstorming of cute fashion related names, I realized I didn’t like any of them so I went back to a source of inspiration: Tori Amos. For six years, I had a site called SheCould.net (now found on the Way Back Machine), which was inspired by the lyrics to Amos’s song Marianne (listen). Though site is very different from that one, I wanted a similar name with a new identity so I chose part of a lyric from Amos’s Blood Roses (listen). Both songs are from the album Boys for Pele, which I listened to religiously during adolescence.

Can I ask you what to wear to a wedding? Or another event I’m going to?
Sure! I reply to every comment and tweet I receive, so if you need help picking something out, I can try my best to help you! The best way to get in-depth advice is to email me at courtney[@]thosegraces.com.

Technical Questions

I’m a blogger and I need help with my layout. Can you help me?
I can! Shoot me an email at courtney[@]thosegraces.com

How can I come up with a good domain name?
Aside from the obvious advice of making it short, sweet and easy to remember, your blog name should also be personal to you. Think of songs or poems that have meant something to you for inspiration (Make sure to credit them properly!). Do you have a fun nickname that would make a good domain name? Does a phrase just sound good to you? Pick something that comes from the heart.

What blogging platform do you use?
I’m based on a self-hosted WordPress using the Genesis framework with the Associate child theme.

Who’s your webhost?
My webhosting is through Verve Hosting, which I would recommend to anyone in need of a webhost.

Where’s your domain registered?
My domain is registered through Enom, which I have no opinion about since I technically bought it through a reseller.

What type of computer and editing software do you use?
At the moment, I am Mac-based. I have used Adobe Photoshop and GIMP and other programs to edit photos. If you can afford it, I think Photoshop is the best option for editing. If you can’t, then GIMP works well as a basic editor. I use iMovie to edit any videos I make.

What type of camera do you use?
I use two cameras for photos on this blog: The Nikon D5000 and the Sony Cybershot DSC-V1. My Sony point and shoot kicked the proverbial bucket in January 2012 after six years of faithful service. I’ve been using the Nikon D5000 (a DSLR) since January 2011. Though I like this camera, I wouldn’t wholeheartedly recommend it since some better ones came out between now and when the D5000 was originally manufactured. If you are looking for camera recommendations, I recommend using CNET as a starting place for your research.

Can I put an ad on your site?
I am not currently accepting banner advertising.  To find out other ways to work with me on advertising and sponsorship, check out this page.
