Summer Nails that Go POP!

Woodstock Polish from Urban Decay's Rollergirl Nail Kit

This week’s Friend Friday is all about manicures!

I wasn’t a nail polish girl until I uncovered the secret to perfect DIY manicures in Grit and Glamour’s Nail Polish Tips and Tricks. Vahni recommends waiting about 30 minutes from each coat, and while this seems like a long time, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding another layer was the trick to making my manicures last.

Following Vahni’s advice made my manicures last a week without chipping. In total, most manicures took two hours, which shocked some of the women I told, but it didn’t seem that outrageous to me especially since my weekly manicures coincided with two hour episodes of The Bachelorette on Monday nights.

Xandu and Miss T Polishes from Urban Decay's Rollergirl Nail Kit

For most of May and June, I relied on Urban Decay’s Rollergirl Nail Kit to give me that extra pop to my polish. This kit comes with six different colors that transition well from summer into fall. As you already know, I love layering products so I didn’t pass up the opportunity to get creative with layering these polishes.

Superfreak and Fame Polishes from Urban Decay's Rollergirl Nail Kit

Since the wedding, I haven’t had much time to sit down and do my nails every week, but once we get a couch and I can sit and watch Bachelor Pad (I know you’re judging, but we all have our guilty pleasures!) every week, I’ll be back to painting my nails.

What colors did you rock this summer? Do you like painting your nails? Leave a comment to share your thoughts!

p.s. If you read via RSS feed, have you been to Those Graces lately? Come check it out! It’s totally redesigned for your viewing pleasure.

p.p.s. It’s my birthday today! And Leia’s, too!

Disclosure: The Urban Decay Rollergirl Nail Kit was provided to me by Urban Decay. This is not a sponsored post and I did not receive compensation nor was I required to do a review. My opinion is mine alone and truthful as always.

  3. Beautiful colors! I love your nail polishes collection!

  4. Visiting from FBFF.
I like the pink with glitter nails.

  5. What a fun post! I found you through FBFF, and I love your tips about waitung 30 mins between coats. When I have the time and am not feeling too ADD, ;), I try to do that too. I agree that it helps a bunch. Those Urban Decay colors are great.

  6. i love painting my nails and ive recently been doing my own nail art too :)

  7. Oh my gosh, how did I not know about this trick?? I’ll totally be waiting 30 minutes between coats now! Thanks for sharing :)
Oh and bachelor pad is TOTALLY a guilty pleasure of mine as well haha!

  8. Love anything from Urban Decay, such fun colors! You blog is adorable :D

  9. 30 minutes, eh? I should try that! I agree that doing it while watching TV is a great time because you are distracted and not impatient!

  10. Aww, happy birthday! xoxo

I think I totally missed Vahni’s post – I’ll definitely be trying waiting between coats next time I paint my nails. I painted my nails last Saturday and had to take it off by Tuesday because it was all chipped. It’s so not worth painting them when they chip that quickly!

Long time lurker, first time commenter :). I just wanted to say happy birthday, and I love the redesign! Oh & a belated congratulations on your marriage :P.

    • I’m so glad you mentioned the layout! I’m really like it, too. The old one had run its course.

Thank you for the birthday and well wishes.

      Please comment again soon!

  12. Happy birthday, birthday twin! I often do my nails while watching TV, too, but it rarely takes me more than 45 minutes (usually less!). Around once a month I treat myself to professional manicures, though, because I’m not very good at filing and taking cares of the edges around my nails (cuticles etc.).

Hope you have a wonderful day!

    • Thanks girl! I hope you had a wonderful birthday as well!

I’ve only gotten a manicure twice in my life. The second time was for my wedding and I noticed my cuticles were splitting a lot afterwards. I didn’t like that!

  13. Happy birthday! Hope you’ve had a great day!!

Never thought about layering polishes before – might have to try that. Always paint my nails whilst watching TV – the best way to do it!! :)

  14. Thanks to bloggers I’ve been getting really into doing my nails these days. I like the colours in the kit above. My manicurist probably thinks I’ve left the face of the earth. It’s just so much fun! I’ve read during the waiting drying process!

I’ve been into corals and yellows this summer, and will buy more soon.

    • Bloggers are why I started doing mine as well and then it just got addicting until life kicked me off the bandwagon.

It’s more fun to do them yourself anyway!

  15. First up…Happy Bday!!

I love these colors and the way that your many turned out. I almost never wait 30 mins in between layers of polish so I’m quite sure that’s why my manis never last more thana couple of days. I will keep that tip in mind next week.

Ok, I guess you have isolated my problem with DIY Mani’s. I’ll give this 30 min thing a go next time.
Roller girl polish? Good name, making me roller derby homesick.

  17. Love the GOLD! Soooo good!

  18. AWESOME! OK, happy birthday, and I’m so glad my tips helped you!

I have been known to do my nails while watching The Bachelorette as well. The thing people don’t get is you can put a coat of color on, proceed with your day or night, then put the second coat on hours later. It’s not like we’re sitting around doing nothing but our nails. Like you said, it’s just kind of putting on a coat, then revisiting it later.

Thanks for the mention and the tweet!

    • Thanks Vahni! They were a HUGE help.

I like to do mine all in one shot, though it was REALLY hard at first to wait the thirty minutes the first time I did it, but after that it didn’t seem too long especially when I saw results! It lasted 5-7 days without chipping, which to me is worth the 2 hours. Plus it coincided with The Bentley Season.

  19. You have a fabulous birthday twin – love Leia! Happy Birthday!!!

haha I love that you paint your nails during The Bachelorette ;) It really does help to leave time between coats to build up color. I enjoy doing them while watching TV as well because you can kind of time around them too

  20. Two hours sounds about right, which is why I end up going to a salon. At home, I rarely sit still long enough not to blow it immediately. Yikes!

Love the new design, by the way. Very pretty and feminine.
