You were my first love. I was head over heels with your sharp looks and easy handling. Though I avoided smartphones for years, I knew you were the one. Or at least I thought so until the fateful October day after upgrading my iOS subsequently deleting Google Maps. iPhone, then we had problems.
I know Apple Maps angered a lot of people, but experiencing it firsthand was something else. One night you told me I was in The Fenway when I was really at Fanuiel Hall three miles away. You got me lost when it was cold and rainy.
From there things just got worse. For example on another night, you decided you didn’t want to turn off anymore. Your power button was broken, and as a result, you killed my battery. Luckily you were still under warranty so the hipsters at the Apple store gave me a new one for free.
I overlooked your hardware and software flaws because when I was with you, I felt special. I loved having Instagram and Twitter at my fingertips so I put up with your poor behavior. That and by December Google Maps had come out with an iPhone app.
I was ready to move on when you broke my MacBook Air.
I didn’t see any harm in backing up one compatible device up to another compatible device, but you crashed my hard drive when I tried. Not to mention it was the day before a blizzard that shut down the city. I raced across town, dropped the MacBook off and prayed the hipsters could fix it in time.
I wish I could say that was the last thing you did wrong, but you didn’t stop there. Your home button started to give out and finally stopped working. Thankfully you were still under warranty and the hipsters gave me a new phone. This time, however, I was less enthused. You were my third iPhone in 11 months. And you were my last.
My husband, so fed up with hearing me complain, gave me his upgrade and I left you, iPhone. For the past five months, I’ve been in a relationship with a Samsung Galaxy s3. It turns off when I tell it, it drove me across the country and back and has never needed repairs. I think it’s the one. At least until my next upgrade.
