A few weeks ago I mentioned to my husband David that I wanted to start a podcast, and he surprised me by saying he wanted to help! So this week we’re kicking off our brand new show, Dubs and Bubs, after our nicknames (we’ll get into the name during the next episode!) Twice a month, we’ll be talking about everything from feminism to football.
Dubs and Bubs #1: Can a Man Be a Feminist?
In our first episode, we share our thoughts on feminism as well as the role of women in the workplace and in film. Let me know what you think of this episode! We’ll be back in two weeks to talk about the South, college football and whatever else comes up!
(If you’re reading via feed, you’ll have to click over to the post to listen to the podcast!)

Three things:
1) I get “Dubs”, but I think I’ll need some enlightenment on the “Bubs” nickname.
2) I like more or less all statements that include the phrases “with the exception of pest control” or “throw a little bit of pop culture in”
3) Having been raised by and alongside strong women, I agree with David that ‘feminism’ is about access and choice. I also think that strong female role models are just as important for young men as they are for young women. As David alluded to, in a lot of our most challenged neighborhoods and institutions (namely public schools), there is a serious leadership gap left by absenteeism among men. In our City Year school, the number of men in the building could be counted on one hand, so the vast majority of character-building and shaping was done by female role models. Though the kids in those schools face daunting obstacles to their success, thankfully there are many strong women who work tirelessly to give their students the chance to build a better life for themselves.
Your comment made us laugh!
LOL @ David’s pest control comment. True story: We said we were going to talk about the South in our next episode. We started recording and got in 1 fight about the South and also realized we were talking only about the white South and sounded ignorant. That being said, we decided to talk about our first jobs for the next podcast, which means *drumroll* More pest control talk! Stay tuned.
I think both you and David are wonderful examples of men who can be feminists (don’t know if you self-identify as such, but just my impression). Seeing strong women is important for males as well as females–you are right.
I think looking at underresourced public schools and the prevalence of strong females would be an interesting topic to look at. I think fortunately for many students in these schools they can turn to these women (hopefully). That being said, you need examples of both strong men and women. Hopefully things change in the future.
I love the conversation about the “test”. That’s crazy! Great addition to the blog. Love it!
Laura Connell recently talked about 100 years of East London style in 100 seconds
Thanks Laura! I’m glad you liked it!
The test is kind of astounding. When David first told me about it, I was shocked how many of my favorite movies failed.
