How to Wear a Maxi Dress to a Summer Wedding

How to Style a Maxi Dress

Can you wear a maxi dress to a wedding this summer? Sabrina of A Moment in Style has an answer and it’s a resounding yes. Keep reading to find out what Sabrina, who is a former Accessories Editor for InStyle Magazine, how pulled each of these looks together.

First Look

The color of the yellow dress is such a statement that you should keep the accessories classic and streamlined in silver, which compliments the yellow.

Second Look

The floral boho dress is perfect for a more casual wedding! Wear with wedges and long chains to complete the look.

Third Look

With this look you can have a little more fun since the dress is so basic, go with a fun beaded bag. I love the global feel! Add some gorgeous gold bangles and gold/jewel toned earrings to complete the look, keep the shoes simple since the other accessories have a lot of character.

  1. Hi. im in dire need of something to wear to a July wedding. please can you give me some ideas on what to wear that’s cheap. I would like a knee length skater dress, recently I have tried on “Knee Length” but there all to short or a gorgues maxi dress. im looking for plain colours, preferably a peach/orange colour or navy. where can I find a suitable dress. also im only 19 so nothing to old. please help :(

    • Hey Nicole! Sorry to hear you’re having trouble finding something. I’m going to work on a post for you to come out next week. I’ll email you when it’s up!

  2. Absolutely love these looks. Could you wear a large leopard print jersey maxi dress with a Kharki green waterfall jacket for a wedding in August? Also what accessories would you recommend if you think this would be appropriate?

    Thanks

    Lauren

    • That’s a great question Lauren! Sabrina was the one who did this guest post, but I’ll try to answer!

Personally, I would stay away from any super bold prints for a wedding unless it’s some sort of hipster wedding. The focus of the day should be on the bride, and I think that a leopard print might distract from her a bit. I do think the waterfall cardigan sounds lovely, though!

As for accessories, they really help play up the maxi dress, which is often seen as more casual. Keep in mind that accessorizing will help the dress feel, well, more dressy. Do you have any links of the dress you were thinking of?

  3. Your head to toes looks are a perfect style guide for wedding guest. If ladies thought picking out there wedding dress was hard, trying to wear something appropriate for a wedding can be just as difficult. Not all peole are armed with your fashion knowledge. With summer coming to an end. There will be a few more summer weddings.

    • AMEN TO THAT! I definitely put a lot of thought into what to wear as a wedding guest, but not as much as I did when choosing my wedding gown. Though it’s stressful trying to pick out what to wear to someone else’s wedding, it’s nice to know not ALL eyes will be on you.

  4. Since I’m so short, it’s always hard to find a maxi that has the right proportions, but I found one recently and now I’m obsessed! That black maxi is so elegant. Love it.

  5. I wore a maxi to your wedding! I love ‘em… sooo comfortable in the summer.

  6. Thanks so much for the ideas! I have a wedding to go to in September and by then, I will be due to deliver at any time (aka I will be huge!) so I have no choice but to go for a maxi. Accessories definitely make all the difference!
