Crazy for Lush: Where to Start With Lush Cosmetics

This is the second part of an ongoing series about LUSH: Fresh Handmade Cosmetics. You can read the first part here In this post, Nikki will share some her favorite Lush products!

One of the great things about Lush is that they are very liberal with their samples – so take advantage of it! Try things out to see what works best for you! If you buy something and find that it isn’t what works for you, you can bring it back with the receipt within 30 days for a full refund or after 30 days or without a receipt for an exchange. Also, the sales associates are usually really nice and helpful, but keep in mind that you know your skin best. In my six week love affair with Lush, I have been to stores in Boston, Philadelphia, San Diego, and several locations in New York City, where I live. If you live in or are visiting NYC, the SoHo store is must visit – the sales associates are the best!

If you have also struggled with your skin and are interested in trying something new, here are some great products that work for most skin types. These recommendations are based on products that work for my skin type (sensitive/combination skin), as well as several of my friends who have other skin types (oily, acne-prone, dry, cystic acne, etc). Reviews are also based on the advice of the sales associates, and on the product reviews at Lush.com

Lush Ocean Salt Coconut Cream and Sea Salt Scrub

Ocean Salt Coconut Cream and Sea Salt Scrub ($19.95 for 4.2oz, $34.95 for 8.8oz) is an amazing exfoliator and deep cleanser. It’s not too harsh for even sensitive skin types, but I only use it every couple of days. It really evens out the texture of my skin very noticeably, decongests pores, and leaves my skin feeling refreshed. I also find it to be a great cleanser for areas that are prone to blackheads.

Lush Fresh Farmacy

Fresh Farmacy Soothing Calamine Cleanser Bar ($9.75 for 3.5oz) is very calming for redness prone skin. My skin is sensitive, so it’s not surprising that I love it, but my friends who have more oily, acne-prone skin love it as well. I use it in the morning right when I wake up and I find that it makes my skin feel calm, moisturized, and clean all day.

Lush Mask of Magnaminty

Mask of Magnaminty ($22.95 for 11oz, smaller quantity available in stores for around $10) is a Lush miracle! It seriously does wonders for the skin. After using it, I find that my skin is softer, smoother, and that my pores are smaller. It also helps reduce the number and size of my blackheads. I adore Mask of Magnaminty and would recommend it to anyone!

Lush Full of Grace

Lush’s Full of Grace Serum Bar ($13.95) is an amazing night moisturizer that completely improves the appearance and texture of your skin immediately and more and more over time. That in itself is reason enough for me to use it, but it also is supposed to reduce the appearance of aging, help make scars disappear, and enhance the effects of their masks, so I will definitely be continuing to use it for as long as they keep making it!

Lush Eau Roma Water Toner

Eau Roma Water Toner ($8.95 for 3.3oz, $19.95 for 8.5oz) is only rose water and lavender water, but it’s so moisturizing and refreshing that I will never go back to my non-toner-using ways of the past. Their other toners – Breath of Fresh Air and Tea Tree – are both worth a try too, depending on your skin type.

I am not an ambassador for Lush and they do not pay me, but I am begging you – go to Lush. You owe it to yourself to take care of your skin. I honestly believe that my decade of struggling with my skin is a direct result of putting harsh chemicals onto it. I spent way too much money on overpriced products and was self-conscious about my skin for too long. Lush has absolutely changed my life in six short weeks.

And just think the less time and money you spend having to cover up skin problems the more you can spend on fun things like this! Let me know if you give Lush a try and how it works for you! Do you already use Lush’s skincare line? If so, which products are your favorites? Share your thoughts by commenting.

Next Monday, I’ll be sharing Ryann’s recommendations for what to try out at Lush. Also keep an eye out in the coming weeks for Nikki’s recommendations on shower, bath, and body products from Lush!

Neither Nikki, Ryann nor I are employeed by Lush. We are not being paid to talk about the brand. Lush has no idea we’re doing this series. We are seriously just that obsessed.

    • I think even if you don’t don’t like Lush, there’s probably at least one product in there that you’ll like. I want to try the cocunut scrub now, too!

  2. That toner situation is interesting!!! I’ve always had to stick with natural products because my skin is so sensitive it’s something I learned from a very very early age. Even natural products sometimes are a bit too strong for me…if you have super sensitive skin I would advise staying away from willow bark, a common ingredient in a lot of stronger natural skin remedies. It did a number on my skin!

But I’m definitely pinning that toner guy and full of grace bar. Those are right up my alley! Thanks for sharing, I’ve walked passed Lush a hundred times but am always so wary about products that I’ve never tried them.

    • Jamillah–I was the EXACT same way. I’ve actually walked in and straight out of Lush stores, but I finally went with Nikki and got more comfortable there. I think sometimes their sales tactics can be a bit too-hard sell, but you can always ask for a sample and just tell yourself you’re not going to buy anything. And, great thing is, anything you buy can be returned even after the 30 day return period. So it’s a win all around!

I’m on the fence about toners. I’ve never liked them and think they are kind of a marketing scam invented by Clinque’s 3 step system (cleanser, toner, acne treatment). However, I am slowly coming around to the idea of a toner. I think next month I’ll try one and see how it goes. Apparently, the claim is that they make you skincare sink into your skin better and you use less makeup.

Thanks for the tip about willow bark! I also feel its necessary to say: Make sure you check the ingredients on these lush products if all-natural is something that’s important to you. While Lush is a great brand, there’s a reason why their tagline is “fresh, handmade” and not “all natural.” Some items contain parabens, but not all. Just look at the ingredients first!
