With summer wedding season right around the corner, many of you may be hitting the stores to figure out what to wear. My husband and I are invited to his best friend’s wedding this summer. Upon learning about their engagement, I was of course excited, but then I thought, “What will I wear?!” I began my hunt, but soon realized Mad Men and Kate Middleton inspired fashion has a stronghold on dresses this season, pushing necklines up to the neck. If high necklines flatter you, sit back and enjoy the season because there’s something for you in every store. However, If you’re like me, you’re probably having a hard time finding wedding-appropriate dresses this season. I’ve searched high and low to bring you this season’s dresses that are fun and wedding appropriate but not in the Mad Men theme.
Pull Off the Strapless Dresses
If you like strapless, there are so many options that make for great picks for summer weddings. What you’ll most likely be able to find in the stores are strapless dresses that billow out from the waist, but there’s not many pencil cut strapless dresses in stores right now. With any strapless dress, you want to make sure it’s going to stay up all night so if you have a larger bust, you may have a harder time finding options.
Strapless dresses can be great options for both formal and casual weddings, just make sure you pick the appropriate fabric and print depending on the situation. For example, I think the Silk Confetti Dress by Halston Heritage dress would work well for formal weddings whereas the Banana Republic dresses will work better for semi-formal or casual weddings.
Rock the Maxi Dress
If you’ve ever had any inclination to run out and buy a maxi dress, you’ll have a lot of choice right now. Maxi dresses are perfect for casual backyard and beach weddings, but err on the side of caution when it comes to black tie optional and choose something a bit more formal. For this setting you’ll need to pay more attention to the fabric and print of the dress to make sure it doesn’t look too casual.
Trendy Little Dresses
I always hesitate when suggesting a trendy dress for a wedding, because whatever is in fashion at that moment will forever be enshrined in someone’s wedding photos. However, I know a lot of people don’t agree with me, so if you are someone who likes to wear trends, this season features pleats and flowy fabrics that will be sure to strike your fancy. You can find these dresses everywhere right now, though you’ll have options if you look in the Juniors section of the department store. This style can work for both formal and casual weddings, though for formal, you won’t want to go too short unless you think its appropriate.
These dresses definitely will make a statement! And just to prove how popular they are, 2/3 dresses featured above are already sold out in their displayed colors after just two days. You should still be able to find them in other colors, however.
Classic Dresses that Aren’t Boring
OK, so I know I said I wasn’t going to show you any dresses that look like they’re out of Mad Men, but if you do choose to go with something more classic, there are a lot of options out there right now that are classic cuts with a twist. To stand out in a sea of January Jones lookalikes, you’ll want to look for classic cuts with a modern geometric print. If you’re more into solid color dresses, look for options like the Trashy Diva Honey Dress, which puts a sexy spin on a classic cut.
Classic dresses can work for every type of wedding setting, so you’ll just want to make sure to pick the one that suits you best.
What Will You Be Wearing to Summer Weddings This Year?
A strapless dress? How about the maxi? Are you into the Mad Men style or over it? Ironically even after all my research and looking at the hundreds of dresses, the Anais Party Dress by Milly turned out to be my favorite. Maybe I like Mad Men fashion after all.
